The Vessel and Her Loss
New Era was carrying German emigrants from Bremen to New York when she struck the outer bar off Deal Beach, New Jersey in a November gale. The ship broke apart in heavy surf close to shore, and despite the efforts of local residents, hundreds of the emigrants aboard drowned within sight of land. The disaster was one of the worst passenger ship losses on the New Jersey coast and became part of the case for organized lifesaving stations. Accounts of the wreck circulated widely in the press at the time.
