The Vessel and Her Loss
Mono was a wooden steamship built under the rushed World War I Emergency Fleet Corporation shipbuilding program. Like many of her sister vessels, she became surplus once the war ended and submarine losses no longer needed replacing. She was towed to Mallows Bay on the Potomac River, where failed scrapping efforts left her timbers as part of the Ghost Fleet that remains today.
