The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1902 at Aberdeen, Washington, as a four-masted lumber schooner, Mindanao carried Pacific Northwest timber for two decades, surviving a shipboard fire in 1925 while under tow to Fiji. She later served as a sportfishing barge off Newport Beach and was deliberately burned and scuttled about a mile offshore on May 27, 1946.
