The Vessel and Her Loss
Built at Dayspring, Nova Scotia, in 1965 for Adams & Knickle, the Lunenburg scallop trawler Margaret Jane was heading home with an injured crewman on July 31, 1980. Near West Ironbound Island, in dense fog, the new trawler Cape Beaver, on a shakedown cruise with dignitaries and a CBC film crew aboard, sliced into her port side. She sank within two minutes. Four of her 18 crew died, among them 16-year-old Kelly Crouse; a judicial inquiry followed.
