The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1872, the three-masted schooner Margaret A. Muir was carrying 650 tons of salt on Lake Michigan when, on the morning of September 30, 1893, about three miles off Ahnapee, she fell into the trough of the sea and an enormous wave swept her deck. Captain David Clow and his six men got away in the yawl as she keeled over and sank, and all reached the beach. Her standing masts became a hazard and were dynamited the next summer. It was Clow's third ship lost in three years.
