The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1922 as the cargo ship SS Wilton, this vessel was acquired by the U.S. Maritime Commission and Navy in 1941, converted to a weather patrol ship, and served as USS Manhasset and later USCGC Manhasset during the Second World War. Sold out of government service in 1946, she entered Panamanian merchant registry under the name Manhasset and was wrecked on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, on 4 July 1947, adding to that island's long list of recorded shipwrecks.
