The Vessel and Her Loss
Bartholomew Roy built the two-masted schooner Maid of the Mist at St. Clair, Michigan, in 1863. On September 25, 1878, while waiting off Huron Beach for a load of cedar posts, she was caught by a strong gale, dragged anchor, grounded and broke her keel. Her remains lie in three sections in about seven feet of water, with both sides and the bow buried deep in sand.
