The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1876, the three-masted schooner Lottie Cooper was bringing elm lumber from Pine Lake, Michigan, to Sheboygan when a northwest gale caught her on the evening of April 8, 1894. Unable to signal a tug, her crew anchored to wait for dawn. By morning she was flooding and her bulwarks were washing away. Before help arrived she capsized and sank, her cargo tangling in the rigging. Life-Savers and the tug Sheboygan saved five people; one man drowned on a raft of planks.
