The Vessel and Her Loss
Le Lyonnais was an iron screw steamer of a French line running between New York and Le Havre. On the night of 2 November 1856, outbound from New York, she collided with the barque Adriatic south of Nantucket Shoals. She sank slowly over the next days while boats were launched. Most of those aboard died; about 16 survivors were picked up.
