The Vessel and Her Loss
Lavinda was built at Allegan in 1863 as a wooden two-masted schooner. Her service included several collisions and groundings, new rigging in 1873, and rescue after becoming waterlogged at Racine in 1881. She ultimately lay sunken and abandoned in Milwaukee’s Kinnickinnic River boneyard under owner Patrick Kearns. A January 9, 1897 newspaper report confirms her sunken condition, but not when or why she sank.
