The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1874 as a three-masted canal schooner, LaSalle loaded 22,000 bushels of wheat at Chicago for Buffalo in October 1875. Sailing north into a gale on the night of October 25, she unshipped her rudder off Two Rivers Point, now Rawley Point, struck bottom and drifted into the quicksands there. She filled, and her crew spent the night in the rigging until Two Rivers fishermen rescued them at dawn. Tugs from Milwaukee could not free her, and she was stripped and abandoned as a total loss.
