The Vessel and Her Loss
King George was a 171-foot, 338-ton dredger that began work maintaining Bermuda's shipping channels around 1911. After nearly two decades of service she was superseded by a newer dredger, the Lord Cochrane, and was towed out and deliberately scuttled about five miles inside North Rock in 1930. She now rests upright and largely intact on a sand bottom, a popular dive site heavily colonized by soft coral and tunicates.
