The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1884, the tug John Evenson answered a call for help from the steamer I. Watson Stephenson and her schooner consorts Alert and Peshtigo on June 5, 1895. While working alongside, she was struck by the steamer, capsized and went to the bottom in under three minutes. Boats from the steamer and schooners pulled her crew from the water within fifteen minutes, but fireman Martin Boswell, below deck when the water rushed in, was lost.
