The Vessel and Her Loss
The iron ship Jason, built in 1870 and registered at Greenock, Scotland, had survived a dismasting cyclone en route from Calcutta with a cargo of jute before nearing Boston in December 1893. On December 5, disoriented by blinding snow and gale winds, Capt. George McMillan ran the ship onto the bars near the Pamet River in Truro. Life-Saving Service crews from several stations worked through the night but could save only one man, apprentice Samuel J. Evans; the captain and 23 others died.
