The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1883, the wooden steam barge J.M. Allmendinger loaded lumber at Sturgeon Bay on November 25, 1895, and set out for Milwaukee. Nearing Milwaukee she was caught in a snowstorm and strong gale and, nearly impossible to steer, ran up onto the rocky shoal at Fox Point about 3 a.m. Life-Savers took hours to reach her, and her crew were so coated in ice they had to be hosed with hot water before they could move. She was abandoned on December 2 and slowly broke up.
