The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1859, the two-masted schooner Island City cleared Ludington on April 7, 1894, with hardwood for Milwaukee. Fourteen miles out of Milwaukee an easterly gale set in and she began to leak faster than her three men could pump. Near 11 p.m. they prepared to abandon her, but while cutting the yawl loose, Captain William Wood was swept away in it with no oars. His two young crewmen went down with the schooner. Wood washed ashore near Mequon the next afternoon.
