The Vessel and Her Loss
Isabel B. Wiley was a coal schooner sunk by the German submarine U-151 off Barnegat, New Jersey on 2 June 1918, one of several vessels attacked in a single sweep that day. The coordinated sinkings, later called "Black Sunday," demonstrated that German submarines could operate directly off the American coast during World War I. Her crew was able to escape before she went down. The event drew wide press coverage and heightened concern along the Eastern Seaboard.
