The Vessel and Her Loss
Ironton was a wooden schooner-barge built in 1873, carrying grain in tow behind steam vessels. In September 1894 she collided with the steamer Ohio in Thunder Bay and sank quickly, killing five of her crew. The wreck lay undiscovered for over a century until NOAA located it in 2019, remarkably preserved with masts still upright. It remains one of the most significant finds in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
