The Vessel and Her Loss
J. Randall built the two-masted schooner Illinois at St. Joseph, Michigan, in 1848. On October 29, 1873, lumber-laden and bound for Chicago, she went ashore broadside about two and a half miles south of Baileys Harbor near Smith's pier and sank. She was badly damaged, and an attempt to raise her in May 1874 failed.
