The Vessel and Her Loss
Home was a wooden two-masted scow-schooner built in Milwaukee in 1867 by Ellsworth & Davidson. On November 14, 1876, she was carrying lumber and attempting to enter Racine harbor when her steering apparatus broke. She went ashore beside the north pier and broke her bottom, reportedly on the wreck of Scott. The captain and four crew escaped in the lifeboat; the Life-Saving Service salvaged about half the cargo before the vessel went to pieces.
