The Vessel and Her Loss
Hiram R. Bond was built at Milwaukee in 1888 as a wooden screw steamer and later cut down into a scow-like sand dredge. Returning to port with sand in dense fog on May 29, 1905, she collided with the car ferry Pere Marquette No. 20 and sank immediately. Her crew were taken ashore by a tug, and salvage efforts failed. Divers located the wreck in May 2003.
