The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1941 at Warren, Rhode Island, as the wooden coastal minesweeper USS Heroic (AMc-84), she swept Chesapeake Bay during World War II and was decommissioned in 1945. As the Boston fishing vessel Elizabeth B. and later Heroic of Gloucester, she fished New England waters. On August 21, 1969, bound for Georges Bank, she caught fire in the engine room; her five crew were rescued by the West German trawler Tiko I, and she sank on Stellwagen Bank.
