The Vessel and Her Loss
H.D. Coffinberry was a wooden steam-powered bulk freighter that worked the Great Lakes carrying cargo for several decades. In June 1919 she ran aground near Sand Island in the Apostle Islands. The vessel could not be freed and was abandoned, eventually breaking up in the shallow water. Her remains are now scattered across the lakebed near shore.
