The Vessel and Her Loss
Bound for Marquette with 1,330 tons of coal, the 200-foot schooner George ran into an intense snowstorm in a typical fall gale. The wind ripped her sails off, and on October 24, 1893, she ran aground near Mosquito Beach at Pictured Rocks. All eight crewmen and one woman survived by rowing a yawl to Grand Island. About 120 feet of her hull lies in 15 feet of water.
