The Vessel and Her Loss
William Jones built the two-masted schooner Gen. Winfield Scott at Black River, Ohio, in 1852. In August 1871, after clearing Menominee for Chicago with lumber, she met heavy seas off Spider Island, began taking water and capsized while her crew reefed the mainsail. They clung to the hull nearly twelve hours until the schooner Ethan Allen rescued them. The hull drifted onto a shoal off Hog Island and broke up.
