The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1855, the three-masted bark G.L. Newman left Little Suamico with lumber on October 8, 1871, the night of the Great Peshtigo Fire. Smoke lay so thick on Green Bay that the Green Island lightkeeper, Samuel Drew, had kept his light burning through the day. Sailing blind, she ran onto the shoals off the island at 9 p.m. Drew rescued her crew, who stayed at the lighthouse for a week. She filled and was abandoned, and her rigging was later salvaged.
