The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in Toronto in 1922, Francis IV belonged to Carl W. Johnson and was associated with the Chicago Yacht Club. She finished first in the inaugural Chicago-to-Sturgeon Bay powerboat race in summer 1926. After taking on 350 gallons of gasoline at Sturgeon Bay the previous day, she departed Horseshoe Bay northbound on August 6, 1927. An explosion and fire sank her in about 40 feet of water within two minutes of a distress signal; three people died and Margo rescued two.
