The Vessel and Her Loss
Towed as a consort by the steamer Birckhead, the 160-foot schooner-barge Elma broke loose in a storm near Whitefish Point on September 26, 1895. Seeking refuge at Grand Island, she was struck by huge seas that broke away her rudder and washed her lumber overboard, and she was wrecked about two miles from Miners Castle. Of the nine aboard, one died. Her bottom is often visible in 8 feet of water.
