The Vessel and Her Loss
Edward H. Cole was a four-masted coal schooner sunk by the German submarine U-151 off Barnegat Light, New Jersey on 2 June 1918. She was one of several American vessels attacked that day in a single coordinated sweep by the submarine, an episode later remembered as "Black Sunday" for bringing the First World War directly to the New Jersey coast. Her crew was able to abandon ship before she went down. The attacks caused alarm along the entire eastern seaboard and prompted new coastal defense measures.
