The Vessel and Her Loss
Launched at Dundee in 1876, the iron bark Earlshall joined Job Brothers' salt-fish fleet of St. John's in 1910, carrying cod to the Americas. Returning from Brazil in January 1915 alongside Clutha, Attila and Waterwitch, she passed Cape Race on January 23. A snowstorm closed in overnight and she drifted away from her companions; at about 4 a.m. on January 24 she ran aground in Leeward Cove, south of Motion Head near Petty Harbour, and was wrecked. No lives were lost.
