The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1866, the two-masted schooner E.M. Carrington left Muskegon on November 14, 1880, with lumber for Milwaukee, sailing alongside the schooner Phoenix. In a northwest gale she hoisted a distress signal while her crew pumped and jettisoned the deckload, but she held her course for the Wisconsin shore. Early the next morning, in a southerly gale, she rolled over. Phoenix could not help, and all five aboard drowned. Her wreck was later found floating bow up far out in the lake.
