The Vessel and Her Loss
The tug D. T. Sheridan was towing two barges of coal from Norfolk to Bangor when dense fog put her onto the rocks at Lobster Cove, Monhegan Island, on November 5, 1948. The entire crew was brought ashore safely with the help of a local seaman. Left where she grounded, the steel hull has remained a visible landmark on the island's shoreline for decades, shifted further onshore by a 1970s storm.
