The Vessel and Her Loss
Cumberland was a wooden steam tug built in 1910 at Rockland, Maine, for the Snow Marine Company. On March 17, 1917, while leaving Vinalhaven Harbor towing a heavily laden barge in a gale, her tow cable fouled the propeller and she was driven by heavy seas onto Green Island, where she quickly went to pieces. No lives were lost, and the barge, though damaged, survived.
