The Vessel and Her Loss
Crofton Hall was a British sailing barque bound from Dundee, Scotland, to New York. On 17 April 1898 she stranded in thick fog about three miles from the east spit of Sable Island. The island's lifesaving station rescued the entire crew, some by breeches buoy, and the ship became a total loss, one of the many wrecks recorded on Sable Island's shifting sandbars.
