The Vessel and Her Loss
Cox and Green was a coal-laden schooner under Captain Thompson, bound for Chelsea, Massachusetts, when the great November 1888 storm caught six schooners anchored in Nantasket Roads near Boston Light. She was the first to strike rocks, grounding near Toddy Rocks on the afternoon of November 25, half a mile from the Massachusetts Humane Society's Stony Beach boathouse. Joshua James and his lifesaving crew used a breeches buoy to bring all eight sailors ashore safely; the schooner itself was a total loss.
