Corossol
Naval Vessel · France · Lost Lost days after departing Quebec on November 7, 1693 · The Gulf of St Lawrence
A 20-gun French royal vessel wrecked by storm in 1693 near Sept-Îles, the only confirmed 17th-century French shipwreck yet found in Canada.

The Vessel and Her Loss
Corossol was an armed vessel belonging to King Louis XIV, escorting a fleet of six ships from Quebec to France in November 1693 under Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville. Battered by a storm, she sought shelter in Baie des Sept Îles, struck a shoal, and sank, scattering her cargo of furs. Most aboard, including the wife and children of the King's Hydrographer, perished. Discovered by a diver in 1990, the wreck was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1995.
