The Vessel and Her Loss
Chaves, formally Nuestra Señora del Carmen, San Antonio de Padua y Las Animas, was one of the merchant naos in the 1733 New Spain flota destroyed by the July hurricane along the Florida Keys reefs. She wrecked off Windley Key near Snake Creek. Documentary detail on her specific loss is thinner than for some fleet sisters, but her identity and site are formally recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
