The Vessel and Her Loss
Chase was a British schooner of twenty tons out of Nassau in the Bahamas. On April 26, 1862, USS Onward drove her ashore in Bull’s Bay, South Carolina. Gaines places the grounding on Raccoon Key or near Romain Light. The schooner could not be refloated and was burned a few days later. Her precise wreck position and casualty totals are not established.
