The Vessel and Her Loss
The Mosquito Fleet ferry Calista carried passengers and mail along a regular South Whidbey Island route to Seattle. On July 27, 1922, thick fog near West Point led the larger steamship Hawaiian Maru to ram the Calista, which sank within half an hour. Captain Bert Lovejoy and his crew evacuated all 70 people aboard safely; only the mail and a passenger's crate of chickens went down with the ship.
