The Vessel and Her Loss
Caesar was an English brigantine built in 1814, lost on a reef off Bermuda's west end on 17 May 1818 while sailing from Shields, England to Baltimore under Captain James Richardson. Her cargo of grindstones, bricks, medicine vials, glassware, and lead pigments was heavily salvaged at the time. The wreck was rediscovered in a sand hole in 1957 by diver Teddy Tucker, who recovered further cargo; recovered bricks were later built into Bermuda's Café Cairo and grindstones distributed to local properties.
