The Vessel and Her Loss
Carricks of Whitehaven sailed from Sligo, Ireland, in April 1847 carrying nearly 200 Irish emigrants fleeing the Great Famine, bound for Quebec. She was wrecked off Cap-des-Rosiers on the Gaspé coast, with contemporary accounts recording about 170 deaths among the roughly 173 aboard, making it one of the deadliest famine-ship disasters on the St. Lawrence. The site is commemorated today by a memorial on the Gaspé shore.
