The Vessel and Her Loss
Hebe was a London-built iron twin-screw steamer carrying coffee, medicine, and military supplies when USS Niphon and Shokokon forced her ashore at Federal Point during a gale on 18 August 1863. Her crew escaped and salvaged most of the cargo before Confederate shore batteries captured fifteen Union sailors whose boats had capsized trying to board the wreck. Union warships shelled and destroyed the hulk's boiler and machinery in the days that followed.
