The Vessel and Her Loss
The 533-ton barkentine Bellmont, carrying a cargo of sugar from Cuba toward Boston, was caught by a howling northeast gale with heavy snow as she neared Cape Cod on April 8-9, 1894. She struck the outer Peaked Hill Bars and broke apart within about fifteen minutes, described in contemporary press as collapsing 'like a punctured balloon.' Six of her crew perished instantly; the Peaked Hill Bars lifesaving crew managed to save others despite the vessel's rapid disintegration.
