The Vessel and Her Loss
Arkansas was built in New York in 1849 as a wooden, two-masted, single-deck schooner with a scroll head. It carried railroad iron when it stranded at Long Point in 1852, but was raised and repaired in 1853. Another stranding at Green Bay in 1855 did not end its career. In June 1858 it missed Kenosha harbor, grounded just north of the piers, and broke up as a total loss; its lumber cargo was reported saved.
