The Vessel and Her Loss
Antonica, formerly Herald, was among the more successful blockade runners, with many completed runs. On 20 December 1863 she ran aground on Frying Pan Shoals off Cape Fear while trying to slip past the blockade. Her crew took to the boats and were captured by Union ships. The wreck stayed on the shoals.
