The Vessel and Her Loss
On July 19, 1879, the roughly 100-foot wooden schooner Annie Coleman ran ashore in fog west of Grand Marais on Lake Superior's remote south shore and broke up. Her crew faced a 70-mile walk along the wilderness coast to reach Marquette. Hull pieces on the beach at the Hurricane River have been attributed to her, but she more likely lies buried in sand closer to Grand Marais.
