The Vessel and Her Loss
Amboy was a wooden schooner-barge built in 1874, used to haul coal and iron ore under tow behind steamers on Lake Superior. On November 28, 1905, in tow of the steamer George Spencer and running light toward Duluth, she was caught in the Mataafa Storm and driven ashore near Schroeder, Minnesota. Her crew was rescued alongside that of the Spencer. The two wrecks lie near one another and were jointly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
