The Vessel and Her Loss
Alice Craig began life in 1857 as the US Revenue Cutter John B. Floyd, one of six such cutters built for Great Lakes service. Decommissioned in 1864 and later purchased and renamed by fisherman Frank Boutin, she worked out of Bayfield, Wisconsin, hauling fish and cargo. On November 18, 1887, she foundered or drove ashore in a storm near Bayfield; her crew survived a harrowing night before being rescued by a fishing yawl.
