The Vessel and Her Loss
The 344-ton schooner Albert L. Butler, under Capt. Frank Leland, was bound from Jamaica to Boston with a cargo of logwood when the Portland Gale overtook her roughly 40 miles off Highland Light in Truro on November 26-27, 1898. Driven by northeast gales, she drifted about 15 miles before grounding near the Peaked Hill Bars Life-Saving Station early on November 27. A passenger from Jamaica fell from the rigging and was lost, and two sailors also died, while the rest of the crew and captain were saved.
