The Vessel and Her Loss
Ahnapee was built on the Ahnapee River in 1867 by Neal McLean of Chicago as a two-masted scow-schooner. She was later rebuilt, lengthened and given three masts. On June 9, 1884, while southbound from Torch Lake with railroad ties and cordwood, strong wind drove her ashore on Sheboygan’s North Point. The hull bottom was pounded out, but all six crew were rescued. Salvage failed and her enrollment was surrendered as a total loss on June 30.
